Potty Training Blues

My four-year-old, Ally, has been potty trained for a couple of years. However, staying dry at night has been a different issue. We decided that when she finished the last pack of Pull-Ups we were going to bite the bullet and have her wear underpants at night. Well, so far it’s not going so well. Out of the past 10 days, she has been wet six times. The problem is that she doesn’t wake up and so she is wet all night (the other problem is that I have had to wash her sheets 6 out of the last 10 days).

I was ready to abandon the whole wearing underpants at night deal, say uncle and just keep telling myself what my mom always said “She won’t walk down the aisle still wearing Pull-Ups at night”. But my husband says we shouldn’t give up yet. So, our new plan is to wake her around midnight and take her to the bathroom. Night one of the midnight waking went well. She was dry this morning. I guess my hope is that at some point she won’t need us to wake her anymore as she will be able to wake herself. Does that sound reasonable? If anyone has any other suggestions on what we should try, please pass them along.

I also am curious to see what other readers say about this. Our son is also 4 1/2 years old and has problems at night (or even long naps for that matter). We have chaucked it up to both myself (having issues until the monthly visitor started showing up and then my bed wetting was over) and my husband having issues when we were kids also. Our 7 1/2 year old daughter has never had this any problems day or night and that is who we expected to have them. We really lean towards thinking it is a medical issue that he will outgrow but are anxious to see how your progress goes. Please keep us updated!

Staying dry at night is more a physical issue that you would think.  Most pediatricians will tell you that a child's bladder is not fully developed until nearly 8 years old, that is why many will not stress about dry nights until then.  My nephew (who is nearly 8) has started wearing an alarm type device that sounds when he begins to wet.  It is working for him.
My advice though is try to have her "hold it" for a few minutes during the day to help stretch the bladder muscles which will help at night!  Good luck! For the record, it took us nearly 2 years to get our son potty trained.  Persisitence pays off...eventually!
