The Summer of FREE!

I have decided that this is going to be the theme of our summer. I am making in my goal to see how many free things we can find to do. This week already we have…

  • Eaten a FREE root beer float from Sonic (and enjoyed a FREE bike ride there with my oldest)
  • Saw Bongo Barry in an interactive FREE show sponsored by our local library (and received a FREE download of the music we made during the show)
  • Enjoyed a FREE donut in honor of National Donut Day

Not too shabby for only one week! I love a good challenge and am looking forward to all of the free things I can find around town. One resource that will come in handy in my quest is the new Going Places feature on our home page. This links you to over 500 venues in town that you are able to search by location, cost and type. So if you want a free, outdoor place to visit in your neck of the woods, with a few clicks of the mouse, voila! A list of places that you and your family can enjoy.

Please let me know of any free gems you come across. I’m going to need your help in my quest to do as many free things as possible this summer and I’ll pass along any good ones that come my way.

I love your post! The Going Places feature is a great tool for families.

Great goal! I think we'll see how much we can do for FREE also. Love the idea!

How lucky are we to live in an area so rich with opportunities?!? Today I took my 5 year old to FREE craft time at Michael's (www.michaels.com)  followed by the FREE family summer camp at Bass Pro (www.bassproshop.com) where she had her picture taken, made a craft, won a prize at the casting pond, and tried her hand at archery...all for FREE! We also participated in kidsbowlfree.com this week and the many, wonderful FREE events sponsored by our library.

i love free!  every since college this is one my absoule favorite words.  now that i have a 5 year old and we have to tighten our belts a bit.  i am driven to find cheap entertainment and yes preferably free.  we go to a weekly kids group at library and have gone to many of the events of library. free face painting, puppet shows, magic shows etc.  briarcliff and legends have free summer movies for kids.  one my favs is zona rosa thurs at 7.  free live jazz for parents while kids can play in sprinklers.  jazz museum has free class for kids everyother friday.  gladstone has free theatre in the park.  keep searching free is out there and waiting on ya.

That's is awesome.  I love the idea of searching out "FREE"!   With three kids, it's very often hard to find things that we can afford to do.  We will certainly make a game of finding FREE!
    Thanks for the idea!

Even though it's summer, some of our time is still filled with necessities, like grocery shopping. Price Chopper has a Kid's Club (mypricechopper.com) where they send a coupon for a FREE item each month. It's a reason for my daughter to look forward to going to the grocery store and it gets me out of the many times she says, "Can I have this, mommy?"

I just love finding inexpensive and free activities.  Being on a limited budget during these tough economic times it's often difficult to find fun things to do with the kids or coming up with activities to do with my spouse.  The library is one place that has activities for free all summer long.  I'm also on the lookout constantly for free movie screenings through www.gofobo.com

we had another "free" experience.  my daughter is participating in the midcontinent summer of reading.  it is a great free program.  the kids read (or listen to)  20 books.  once they do this and write them on their lists they return the list and redeem for a free book.  this fuels the love for reading and gets them in a cool library.  after the 5th list they can choose another item if they don't want another book.  it is a wonderful program and gets the kids excited about reading.  so we picked out new book and picked up our second list.
