Clorox Wipes on the Baby Registry?

I vividly remember coming home from my baby shower and organizing all those cute little baby clothes and accessories. It was so exciting to look at those little things and imagine the baby that would soon use them.

Now, five years later, our youngest and last child is one and a half. I've been sorting through some of those same things that have been used well by all three of our children. This time, as I sort through them, I'm wondering if I have any friends or acquaintances who could use them or if I should just drop them off at the thrift store.

It was those items from my baby registry that I thought about as I recently cleaned our carpets. Yes, these two things do actually relate.

I was thinking, as I used the borrowed carpet cleaner, that perhaps baby registries should call for a few more practical things that have some lasting value. I'm extremely grateful for all the gifts that were bestowed on us. It also gives me great joy to pass some of these things on to my friends. However, there are a couple of things that would have made for great baby gifts and would still be helpful today.

Mainly I'm talking about a carpet cleaner and Clorox wipes. Lots of Clorox wipes. (Though really, I'm not partial to any particular brand.) So far, we've potty trained two kiddos with one more to go within the next year. Plus, one of those kiddos is a boy. That explains the lots of Clorox wipes.

I don't really suppose anyone would actually want to give these gifts to the new parents. However, I'm still curious...Is there anything you wish had been given to you before you brought baby home?

I TOTALLY AGREE THAT NON-TRADITIONAL GIFTS ARE THE ONES NEW PARENTS SOMETIMES APPRECIATE THE MOST. NOT ONLY DO YOU USUALLY GET TOO MUCH CLOTHING AT A BABY SHOWER, BUT THEN YOU HAVE TO RETURN WHAT IS SIMILIAR OR THE WRONG SIZES.  I HAVE DECIDED THAT I LIKE GETTING AND GIVING DIFFERENT ITEMS LIKE THE ANTIBACTERIAL WIPES YOU MENTIONED, DREFT DETERGENT, OR A REALLY POPULAR ONE IS A BASKET OF BABY FOOD AND CEREALS.  BABY FOOD ISN'T CHEAP FOR A NEW PARENT AND ITS SOMETHING THEY WILL USE IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS OF BIRTH. OTHER NON-TRADITIONAL IDEAS ARE BABY TYLENOL, GAS DROPS, TEETHING TABLETS OR DROPS.

Jonna, those are great ideas!  You've got me thinking about some creative gifts to give the next time I find myself invited to a baby shower.  Thanks for sharing!

Thanks to local garage sales, I was well-stocked on the standard items for my first long before the church shower, and completely prepared on "standard stuff" for our second (she was obviously going to use her sister's crib), even with a few new outfits of her own. With a third girl coming two years after the second, and coming in December no less, I'm already having family ask what to get for new baby and Christmas. I love your idea!!!
I don't need MORE onesies, pink things, baby socks, etc. We could use "consumable things" like baby wash, diapers, and CLEANING gear... Clorox Wipes, Mr. Clean Magic Erasers, Tide To Go Pens, Laundry Detergent. Laundry Detergent! That would be a WONDERFUL baby shower gift!!! I can't think of anything better! Okay, it may not be "fun" to bring laundry detergent to a shower, but tie a baby toy to the bow and you can make it look cute. :-) I love the concept Lizz... not just for a third child, but for the first as well. Great idea!

Paper plates, paper cups and plastic silverware!  Who has time to do dishes with a new baby in the house?!?!

I think giving services is a great baby/shower gift.  THE BEST baby gift I got when I had my second was from my mom.  She gave me 4 cleaning sessions from a maid service.  It was amazing!  I also think giving gift certificates for haircuts, mani/pedi's, meal delivery, or babysitting is awesome.

I agree.  As first time moms we don't realize what the true necessities are. The tiny "uggs" the newborn size tutu and inflatable duck tub were very cute and i was excited to receive them as shower gifts.  But, just like the ittie bittie sunglasses and huge hair bows they were never used.  As a mother of two now, on a very tight budget I wish I would have registered for diapers, wipes, breast pads, socks (who knew socks would be so expensive!) laundry detergent....
New mommies need to think about what there baby will need as they get older too.  Sippy cups, utensils, size 2,3,4 diapers and toys for older babies not just rattles.
I hope there are expectant moms reading these comments and changing there registries!

i was just thinking the other day i wish before my son was born i had been given or told to stock up on batteries!!!
it is difficult when baby would get fussy and the swing would stop working or that favorite music playing toy would die.

even the camera.....who doesn't take a million photos of their baby?
we've gone through i'm sure $100's in batteries in the past 2yrs since my son was born!
