A True Vacation

We started off our vacation to Dallas by getting lost. Well, I suppose we weren't exactly lost. However, we were hungry. Therefore, it felt like we were lost when we spent more than an hour looking for some place to eat near our hotel.

Yet, aside from the being hungry part, the beginning of our vacation was wonderful.

I suppose I might have forgotten to mention that the kids didn't go to Dallas with us. Thanks to their very kind grandparents, my husband and I were able to have a little getaway. That would explain why the hour in the car seemed so wonderful. It was the start of three days of adult conversation.

It was also the start of not doing dishes, laundry, or helping children be kind to one another.

We ate out at restaurants that didn't have play places. I'm not sure if the restaurants even had chicken nuggets on their menus.

One afternoon, we took our time enjoying the Dallas Museum of Art. Another day, we spent several hours at a water park pretending that we were the kids. On the way back to the hotel, we stopped for ice cream and didn't have to share.

The rest of the time we talked without interruption. We slept in until we decided to get up.

It was lovely.

Yesterday morning, as we took one last look at our hotel room, making sure we hadn't forgotten anything, I sighed while I said, “Good bye freedom.”

My husband chuckled and I could tell he knew just what I meant. Yet, he said, “Yeah, but you love your kids more.”

It's true, I do. I may not have missed the bickering or the dirty diapers, but I sure did miss them! It's good to be home. So good that I just might cheerfully share my next ice cream with my favorite little ones.

Are you going anywhere fun this summer? Will you take the kids? Do tell.

How wonderful! It sounds like you had a terrific time! I have to admit that having my OWN drink without anyone else tasting it is one of my favorite aspects of date night! :-) We're trying to finalize travel plans (with kiddos), but meanwhile - making date night more habitual. It is important for the kids that parents have a solid relationship and bonding time.

sounds fantastic!  we have our bi-weekly date nights during the school year (every week in summer) and take a weekend sans kids every year on our anniversary to road trip locally.  Truly live for those times!  But Tuck also teases me mercilessly about how many times I mention the girls and/or call home to say hi.  I miss them when they aren't glued to my side 24/7.

we're taking a road trip to TX WITH the girls over the 4th of July weekend.  Taking lots of new crafty items I've picked up lately, loads of new library books, snacks galore... oh, and 2 DVD players.  ;o)

will letcha know how it goes!!

Nothing like recharging your batteries...not only good for you, but the kiddos, too!  I'm so glad everyone had such a great time.

A break from the everyday sure refreshes everyone!

I joke with my husband that we have so many kids because the only time I have a night off is when I am in the hospital having another baby!  My next vacation will also be in a hospital, not another baby, but a partial knee replacement. I am sure that I will enjoy the first 12 hours of my stay...

Sounds wonderful. Waiting for the day when my husband and I can go out for a long evening without the kids. Without having to tell them sit down and be quiet. Sounds like you had an amazing time. But in the end we do love and miss our kids when we do get to go out.
