Never Say Never

This afternoon, I offered my little man a binky.

He took it.

He is three years old. He hasn't had a binky for well over a year.

I had half-jokingly offered him the silly thing. I really didn't expect him to take it and proceed to chew on it during the entire car ride to the gym.

Before I had kids, I'm fairly certain I would have been appalled at someone who would offer a preschooler a binky, even if only for a short car ride. Now I know better.

I've learned to say, “never say never.” At least I've learned to say this with things that won't matter in the long run.

So, this means I've used the television as a baby-sitter. I've counted french fries as a vegetable. I've skipped giving the kids baths for more than a couple of nights in a row, and those are just the things I'm willing to publicly admit.

Sure, those things aren't the norm at our house. However, they certainly occur more often than I ever thought they would.

This parenting gig is hard enough without trying to live by a set of self-imposed “I'll never” rules. Wouldn't you agree?

What about you? Have you found yourself doing something as a parent that you never thought you'd do?

This has actually become my motto on child rearing.

I hvae friends that say things like...

"I will never let my kid watch TV until they are 2"
"I will never give my child formula"
    Etc.

I find that most of them have done exactly what they said they wouldn't.

    I for one said
""I will never let my child co-sleep"

That was before I had an infant with acid reflux, that screamed in pain in the middle of the night.

You just don't know.  Thanks so much for your article.

I am a terrible housekeeper.  It does not bother me to leave dishes on the table for "awhile" after dinner, I clean up the breakfast dishes when I am putting lunch on the table.  I am terrible.  Under all the clutter it is typically clean but you might have to navigate the landmine of legos, baby dolls and half full cups!  I totally get the "I would never".

I would never... let my child sleep on the sofa. But oops... she fell asleep there prior to bedtime!
I would never... let my children drink anything other than water in the van, but oops... it is hot and they are thirsty and MY drink is all I have access to.
I would never... allow stuffed animals to take over my house, but oops... my children ADORE them all and actually play with them, so yeah, I guess we should move out and let the stuffed animals and dolls have the house. :-)

Motherhood changes your ideals quite a bit, huh?
    Great post!

When I let my 8 month old crawl to the dog's water bowl and proceed to immerse herself in it....I  knew I had crossed the threshold of things I would never do.....so what's next?
Let's see:  drink pop, eat fast food, watch tv, play video games, date, have a cell phone......
With each passing year, that threshold will find new boundaries....and honestly?  Couldn't be happier about that!

I would never have thought that I would allow my child to say "no" to me and I not do something about it.  But when "no" is every other word...you just have to let it go sometimes.

I parent exactly the way I thought I would.  That is, when they are sleeping, watching a moving, or I'm at work :)
