  • Choosing to Let a Plan Fail

I’m sure you’ve heard it said, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.”  Well, I didn’t plan well when it came to writing this post.  My last-minute solution was to head somewhere with wireless internet.  I could then work on a post while keeping an eye on my preschooler as she played in a play place.  I had a good plan, and yet it was the wrong plan....

  • They're All My Favorites

I believe one of the best ways to show my children I love them is to treat them differently.  For example, no matter how my daughters plead with me, I will never tell them a story about Mike the Monkey.

Mike the Monkey is a fictional character that I created a couple of years ago when my then three-year-old son requested I tell him a story.  Neither of us remember why ...

  • Goodwill Hunting (Or, My New Favorite Store)

I recently asked another mom where she found her daughter's cute clothes.  She laughed and replied that she finds most of them at Goodwill.  I should have known!

         Have you shopped there lately?

I became a Goodwill fan when I started redecorating my family room. I could hardly believe the nice things I found!

Anyways, I had pretty much stuck to the home goods and furniture sections of the store.  It ...

  • If You Give a Mom a Computer

Do you ever say you’re going to get on the computer “to just check my email?”  If so, are you like me and that quick check suddenly turns into much more?

I don’t know about you, but lately I’ve found that when I sit down to do something at the computer, I suddenly find myself doing everything but what I needed to do.

So, if what I’m really supposed to be ...

  • Seller's Remorse (Or, I'm Glad I Found a Used Bread Machine)

We’d been married a few months when my husband got me a bread machine for my birthday.  It may not sound that exciting, but as a new bride,  I was happy to try my hand at something so domestic.  I wasn’t quite ready to try baking bread from scratch without the assistance of an appliance, so a bread machine was perfect.

Less than three years and maybe two ...

  • Saving Money on Kids Clothes

It’s that time of year again when I’m checking my kids’ closets and taking note of what clothes they need for the cooler weather.   My six year old would be content to continue to wear flip flops and summer skirts, but that’s not going to happen!

After spending time in their closets, I realized that my kids aren’t prepared for cooler weather.  Fortunately, this is intentional and I’ve got some tricks ...

  • Dancing on Defense

Soccer kicked off over the weekend.  (Lame pun intended.)  So we began our rushing around to get kids to soccer games and a birthday party.  Due to the busy day, I only caught about a quarter of my daughter’s first game.  As I left, the score was tied.  It wasn’t long before that changed.

“They are getting killed,” texted my husband.

         My response: “Bummer.”

         “She doesn’t ...

  • Whatever You Do, Do NOT Let My Child Fall Asleep!

I’ve spent a fair amount of my parenting years doing my best to get my kids to sleep.  Some of my tactics have involved walking, bouncing, rubbing, shushing, and even running a dryer with my baby in her car seat on top of the dryer.  Of course, loading my babies up in the car and going for a drive rarely failed me.  I think my husband even once loaded up one ...

  • I've Got Home Project Fever

It started innocently enough.  I simply rearranged a few things in my family room to see what a table would like in a different spot.  I liked it.  That was all it took.  Now, I’m visiting thrift stores and picturing what my family room and kitchen will look like when I’ve repainted.  I even primed my brick fireplace today.  Of course, that just made me want to paint ...

  • Because I Couldn't Install Apps on My Rotary Phone

One of my memories of childhood includes using a rotary dial telephone.  I can remember the table my mom kept it on mostly for decoration.  It worked, but it was old-fashioned even then.  My friends were often fascinated by it.  I’m still hoping to talk my mom into giving it to me one day.

Fast forward a couple of years and I had a see-through telephone.  ...

  • Blame It On The Heat

Unless you’ve spent the last few weeks in an air-conditioned bunker, you probably realize we’re experiencing a fun little heat wave around here.  Of course, there are lots of frustrating things that are associated with the extreme heat, but have you thought of the positive things?

Personally, I’ve found that the heat is a super handy excuse.  So far, I’ve blamed the heat for:

    • Not cooking much.
    • Letting my kids ...

  • Books vs. eBooks

I wandered through the store having a hard time not feeling sad.  Sure, I was disappointed the deals weren’t as good as promised, but mostly I was sad.  I’d spent many hours in the café sipping coffee while browsing through books and magazines.  Many Moms’ Nights Out had ended pleasantly over a hot beverage and good conversation in the café.  I’m going to miss them.  Of course, I’m talking ...

  • Made With Love and Worn With Pride

I had less than half an hour to shower, dress, get the kids ready, and get to church on time. A quick look in my closet told me one of my favorite tank tops was hanging up and ready to wear. One of my favorite necklaces was nearby and worked perfectly with the tank.

As I rushed about getting ready, my oldest daughter came to give me a necklace she’d made for me. Four beads ...

  • Parenting With Confidence

Twice now, lifeguards have asked me if my daughter needs a lifejacket.  Both of the lifeguards seemed rather uncomfortable with my three year old’s confidence in the water.  I’m sure it didn’t help that she likes to float on her belly with her face in the water.  She can also hold her breath for a little longer than makes most people comfortable.  Needless to say, I understood why the lifeguards ...

  • Diving In Without Me

We were having a fun family afternoon at the pool when I missed it.  My three year old needed to use the restroom, so we were out of the pool area for a few minutes.  As we reentered the area, I noticed my six year old was standing by the diving boards.

I thought to myself, “Is she really going to jump?”

As I got closer to the diving ...
