Date Night in a Minivan

My husband and I are always looking for new date night ideas, so I thought I'd compose a list of our favorites and hope readers would share their favorites so we can collect new ideas:

  1. Murder Mystery Dinner Theater. Recently, we enjoyed an interactive murder mystery dinner theater with the Mystery Train of Kansas City (review here). This is a fun and novel date night activity. Best of all, you focus on solving the mystery and forget about diapers.
  2. Comedy City. Comedy City is Kansas City's original Improv Comedy troupe. The shows are clean, but fun! The audience gives suggestions to the actors as they perform one-of-a-kind shows. Laughter is a great stress buster and one of our favorite dates.
  3. Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The Nelson is open till 9pm on Thursdays and Fridays. We love to explore the galleries and talk about our favorite and least favorite pieces (often his favorites are my least favorite and vice versa). If you double with other couples, you could even take a scavenger hunt as you explore the galleries.
  4. Ethnic Restaurants. We love to try new foods and visit ethnic restaurants in Kansas City. Some of our favorites are on this list.
  5. Learn new things. Over the years, we've taken cooking classes together at Williams-Sonoma on the Plaza (the instructors are chefs from our favorite Plaza restaurants), oil painting lessons, hot air balloon flying lessons, and more through great community education offered at local shops and colleges. Check this guide for great Community Education resources in Kansas City.

What are your favorite date night ideas? We're always looking for new inspiration!

Bowling has been our craze as of late. Dinner at Cheesecake Factory and a few games at Incredibowl or dinner at Power and Light with a few games at Lucky Strike. You can still talk (unlike a movie) and the bowling alleys are kept cool during these 100 degree heat waves.

We love just going out to eat.  Walking around the plaza is always fun too.

I've recently just become interested in date night, as I hear  more and more couples talk about their date night lives. We definitely need time for ourselves but like other busy families it's hard to MAKE that time happen. So it sounds like something we need to explore as couple ourselves. We need to choose the one time a week, or every other week or once a month (this is something that needs to be explored as to which would work best..suggestions welcomed) where no exuses (unless it's an ER) we have set aside for us, a little us time! No cell phones!! (right? well, carry them for in case of child ER, but only ER calls excepted) What I'd like to read and see suggestions of are the most cost effecient money saving ways to have a date night. The places you've mentioned sound fantastic, but we live a little farther north, not quite in the city so there are no close places, so we have to drive which is fine, but the cost of gas on top of your date night plans could be a little trickier. What are some good, fun or romantic and inexpensive date night ideas?

Thank you so much for the tips! I have always wanted to go to a murder mystery type event. I recently saw that some of the mid continent libraries offer a murder mystery night for free, as well! Talk about making the date even cheaper!

We haven't been on a real date since having our little one.  I would love to just go to the classic dinner and dancing!  Maybe even go to one of the places that does an hour of mini lessons in a style of dance and then has an open dance afterwords.  The other things we like to do are anything cheap or free since the economy changed!  walks to the park to play like kids and eat a picnic... or other similar adventures!  Playing a sport or going to a movie and then just going for a drink and talking.
