Top 10 Signs You Know You're a Mommy

This weekend, my husband and I considered renting a movie. As I scanned Red Box for titles, I realized I hadn't heard of most of the films on the list... in fact the only movies I was familiar with were animated and/or starred animals. When did this happen? And then it occurred to me... this is only ONE significant change brought about by Mommyhood.

This is my Top 10 List of Signs You're a Mom. How many can you relate to?:

  1. I used to drive while listening to my favorite CDs or radio stations. I knew the words to every Sinatra song. Now the only music comes from my children's collection of favorite CDs and the ballads running through my head are no longer Sinatra, but now Mr. Stinky Feet.
  2. I check out a lot of "Juvenile Easy" books at the library and read them all, many of them more than once. I occasionally check out books from the "grown up" section and I'm lucky to finish them after two renewals.
  3. Thanks to potty training.... every time I walk out of the bathroom my two year old says, "Hooray! Good job Mommy!" and my four year old asks if I remembered to wash my hands.
  4. The fridge had a few artistic magnets, one grocery list, and a newspaper clipping, poem or quote. Now, it is covered in alphabet magnets, children's schedules, and photos of the girls' friends and playmates.
  5. We always had a backup tube of toothpaste on hand. Somehow toothpaste doesn't make it to the shopping list once in a while and we have to resort to pink bubble gum toothpaste from a cartoon character laden tube.
  6. Our living room always offered ample seating for guests with a throw pillow or two on the sofa. Now, you frequently need to "relocate" stuffed animals and dolls to find a seat.
  7. Sandwiches were most frequently served as pitas or on hoagie rolls. Now, they come cut out as dinosaurs, hearts, or another "cookie cutter shape" and are decorated with food coloring markers. Rarely do we eat hot roast beef, pastrami, or gyros... bring on the PB & J or Grilled Cheese.
  8. A nice Saturday morning meant sleeping in and making omelets. Now, the "best Saturday mornings" mean sleeping in till 7am and walking to the donut shop or making Mickey Mouse pancakes.
  9. Before children, I could do something from start to finish without interrupti

I must say, in our house the only one that relates is the fridge.... of course I have very strict rules about keeping our house an adult house that a two year old lives in... Stuffies are strictly banned to her own room. And our toddler LOVES to listen to our jazz music, eats what we eat, and sleeps till 8 or 9.
I guess I've always known I'm the "mean mommy".

You know it's interesting - some of those changes have happened for the kids' benefit. For instance, we play fun CDs, but often play educational CDs or stories. There are a lot of things on the radio, even a news program, that I'm not quite ready to explain to a two year old. With food, my girls are generally really good about eating our food, but we give them more freedom at lunch. The holidays have really put a spin on that though! And, I only ran out of toothpaste once :-). Parents Magazine recently ran an article about parenting in American vs. France and it was interesting how much more Americans adjust to the kids vs. the kids adjusting to the parents in France - a lot of food for thought!
