I Can't Watch

When I talk to other expectant moms or chat with them online, I notice that they seem to love watching 'A Birth Story' on the Discovery Channel and other similar programs about childbirth and delivery. They read everything they can, watch baby documentaries and even baby themed movies.

This is my third pregnancy, but one thing remains the same... pregnant or not I CAN'T watch. I didn't watch Friends when Jennifer Aniston gave birth, and from what I understand there was NOTHING even slightly realistic about it. I just don't enjoy watching women in the hospital having babies, whether it's a completely watered down sitcom, movie or full-fledged documentary. I don't understand what is funny or entertaining (in the case of sitcoms and movies) about screaming women giving birth.

As for real life, in childbirth classes, my husband watched the videos. I did not. Listening was painful enough.

When I was having my first, I realized that I saw a reflection in my doctor's glasses and closed my eyes - which then caused my nurses to fear I was going to pass out - I wasn't. I had declined the option of a mirror because I didn't want to see the process and I meant it. In my hospital room, no cameras allowed until baby and I are clean and covered.

I know childbirth is a miracle and blessing from God and I love my children. I just don't see how appreciating the miracle should mean I want to SEE it.

I love watching Baby Documentaries! We recorded both of my deliveries and I treasure that memory.
