Moms, What's in Your Wallet?

I was cleaning out my purse the other day and I was reminded that the contents no longer resemble those of my pre-mommyhood purse. This is an inventory of my purse... Before Children (BC) and After Delivery (AD).

BC: Pens with blue or black ink and pencils with erasers that had not been chewed. A pad of post-its.

AD:  Crayons and miniature notebooks with butterflies and princesses. If a pencil lingers, it is decorated with Disney Characters and a furry top. If I have a pen, chances are strong it contains gel or glitter and it's Hot Pink or Purple.

    BC: My lip gloss.

AD: My daughter's cotton candy flavored Lip Smackers.

BC: Wallet with cash, credit cards, and change. Membership cards for my favorite bookstores and libraries. The occasional movie ticket stub for a non-animated flick.

AD: Wallet with Zoo Pass, Wonderscope Pass, Chuck E. Cheese Coins, Happy Meal Coupons, and membership cards for Toys R Us, US Toy, Babies R Us, Price Chopper, Children's Orchard, etc. Movie stubs from Summer Movie Club... last film I saw in a theater? Madagascar 2. Oh and about that cash... what cash? Oh yeah, that is Emily's - it was sent by grandma for her birthday. We're planning a shopping trip to choose something. The library cards remain, but if you looked at the history of books I check out you would think my interests have shifted from Murder Mysteries and Gourmet Cookbooks to Lift-the-Flap Books, Princess stories, and Margaret Wise Brown.

BC: My hairbrush and a black barrette.

AD: A child's comb and bright colored ponytail holders with bumblebees and flowers.

    BC: Breath Mints and Gum.

AD: Fruit Snacks and Mini-boxes of Raisins. Maybe a granola bar.

BC: My car keys on a small ring.

AD: Keys with a ton of membership cards (see above).

BC: If I would be "hanging out" in an airport or waiting room - a small paperback book.

AD: Mini-Coloring Book, Happy Meal toys, and Stickers.

BC: My cell phone - always charged. Husband, friends, and family in speed dial.

AD: My cell phone, maybe charged - Pediatrician added to speed dial.... and two other cell phones each with Princess Ringers and frequently answered in a hurry when I grab them instead of mine.

BC: Emergency Items like Tide-to-Go pen and Nail File.

AD: Band-Aids adorned with Cinderella and Mickey Mouse, Neosporin, Hand Sanitizer, and Tide Pen (used more than ever). Depending on age of children at the moment, a diaper and cream.

    BC: Nothing personal.

AD: Wallet photos of the most wonderful people I've ever known and loved!

    So, what's in your wallet?

    Hilarious!!  And SO true.
There always seems to be unwrapped gum and random Goldfish at the bottom, as well!

You forgot the hand sanitizer, diaper wipes (which are very rarely used for actual diaper changes), and mounds of Kleenex (both clean and dirty)!

  • Kristina 10 Aug, 08:30 AM

Christy - You're right on! In fact, I feel like I never have a clean kleenex when I need one lately! Babywipes - always on hand, and yes, frequently used to clean up ketchup and dirty hands from fingerpaints at Wonderscope.

I think you should note the size of purse before kids & after kids....mine use to be a nice cute chic Coash purse......now it is a monster BAG or backpack! (Scary thoght is I might be able to stuff a kid in there...hmm) I would have never of dreamed of caring a BAG/something so large in my life (before marriage & kids) but with 3 girls & a husband I must adapt!

    Too funny!

Yes, all of the above with the exclusion to anything with princesses or butterflies.  Add an Epi Pen, Neo To Go and an emergency pack of fruit snacks.  I realized it was out of hand when I sat the Hot Wheels on the counter at the dentist and pulled out the Spiderman mini notebook for scrap paper.  Perhaps he should be required to carry a little tote so I can have my purse back!!!

Michelle - I can also relate on the size and style. Frequently, I've pulled my wallet out of my purse and tossed it directly into the diaper bag instead of taking both.
Korinne - I find the occasional Hot Wheels car too! And I only have girls. :-)

Love it! I'm looking forward to the day I can carry a purse again and not a diaper bag w/ all the essential & not so essential baby items!

Believe me, the day will come when all you find in your purse is for you and you alone. But don't expect to have an emptier purse!
I used to carry a tiny credit card wallet and a comb in the back pocket of my jeans, keys and cash in the front pocket, and I was good to go! With the first son I carried a giant diaper bag everywhere. With the second I learned that all I needed to go to the store was a fanny pack stocked with one diaper, a ziplock bag with 4 wipes and my wallet. I swiveled the fanny pack to one hip which served as a place for the baby to sit. To go to church I carried a large purse with several non-noisy toys, cheerios, crayons, purse-pack of kleenex and blank paper to color on, etc.
Now that my youngest of 4 boys is 11, I got a new, slightly smaller, purse but it is packed to the fullest...with MY stuff. Do I need most of it? No. But I MIGHT.

So funny!  I never even carried a purse before kids.  Now it's a diaper bag that's not even that stylish.  It will be interesting to see if I go back to no purse after I no longer need to haul around diapers, wet wipes, changes of clothes, snacks and juice.  When exactly will that be? :)

Too Funny! You need on of those Buxton Organizers I keep seeing on TV!
  • Lizz 11 Aug, 08:32 PM

So true!  I also have a variety of pieces of trash from my children.  I suppose I should just be grateful that they give the trash to me rather than toss it on the ground, right?

A pool bag works good to,its light weight, and not as heavy as a purse or diaperbag sometimes. It's big enough for at least a few diapers and travel wipes, medicine, bottles and a change of clothes for your little one,and still have room for your wallet and whatever else, such as a toy or two.
