A trip to St. Louis would be incomplete without visiting the St. Louis Arch. On our recent trip, we participated in two Gateway Arch Experiences: a ride on the Gateway Arch Riverboat and a ride to the top of the Arch. Both giving great views of the city and telling the rich history of St. Louis and her role in Western Expansion.

As natives to Missouri, the Cave State with over 6,000 surveyed caves, our family has come to enjoy many cave tours on our road trips and vacations. The kids enjoy the adventurous tales we hear on the tours, and my husband, a former spelunker, is willing to settle for the tourist's version of caving as long as we have three children in tow.

As our family walked into the Butterfly House, my five year old daughter Emily exclaimed, "Mom, I just know this is what heaven looks like!" I can certainly see why she feels this way. The Tropical Conservatory is home to nearly 2,000 tropical butterflies in free flight among lush gardens of 150 blooming tropical flowers and a small pond and waterfall. Everywhere you look there are bright and vibrant butterflies too numerous to count. Having been to several butterfly gardens and houses, and as faithful visitors to the Annual Butterfly Festival at Powell Gardens (one of our family favorites), we were amazed at how impressive the Butterfly House was, far surpassing any exhibit we'd ever seen.

St. Louis, known as The Gateway to the Midwest and home of the Arch, Cardinals and Anheuser Busch, was recently named by AAA magazine Midwest Traveler as the best city for a weekend escape. In addition to all those titles, to me it was home for the first 18 years of my life. I have many wonderful memories of my childhood in St. Louis and am fortunate to have family members that live there so that I can often take my girls to St. Louis to explore all that is has to offer families.

Aptly named as the World’s Biggest Little City, Reno is a city with a robust, ambitious spirit and friendly small city feel. It may be right next door to the greatest city on earth, but that doesn’t mean New York’s Westchester County isn’t a winning destination in its own right. True, there’s no Statue of Liberty or Empire State Building – but the rolling hills and parklands, preeminent cultural institutions and meticulously preserved historic landmarks make for a perfect three-day family getaway any season of the year.

Not long ago, after spending a decade in Northern California, my husband and I moved our family of four back to my childhood home of Middle Georgia, a place I love more than any other. Like a kindergartner at Disneyland, I was beside myself with the excitement of playing weekend tour guide to my husband James and our young sons Andrew and Jack. If you’ve ever had the privilege of visiting Macon, the heart of the Peach State, you know that it’s one of those magical places that linger in your heart long after bidding adieu to its white columns and soulful melodies.
