  • The Very Best Toy Ever.

Last Sunday  afternoon I knew I didn't want to leave the house.  We had spent Saturday driving around to 5 different events and while it was fun, we were all exhausted by the end of the day.  On top of that I had a cold and my husband was working so I needed something entertaining that wouldn't require a lot of effort on my part.  What's a mom to do?

I racked my brain and ...

  • Getting Giddy (Hurry, April, Hurry FAST!)

I love living in Kansas City.  All year round there are so many fun things to do as a family here, but I have to say that I'm getting downright GIDDY about the things that are coming this April.

First...the new Sea Life aquarium is coming...YAY!  My kids are both nature and animal lovers and they LOVE aquariums so this one is going to be a big hit with our family.  My son even entered ...

  • Glorious Winter

Wow...this winter has been amazing in Kansas City!  We've had so many nice days and especially so many nice weekends.  We have definitely been taking full advantage of the warm temperatures by getting outside.  Just last week we spend an afternoon at the zoo and it was fantastic!  The kids played and ran around and we got to say hello to our animal friends that most years we don't see for a few months.  We've ...

  • Where to get Coupons (Legally)

I was recently contacted by a reporter from a local news station that was doing a story on the fact that thousands of copies of the Shawnee Dispatch had been stolen from local grocery stores in recent weeks.  The small community newspaper included coupon inserts and is distributed for free.  However, some greedy folks decided to take each and every copy from many different grocery stores, leaving none behind for anyone else.  (The story suspected ...

  • It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year (for shoppers)

The gifts have been given, songs have been sung, family time has been enjoyed and now it's time for shoppers to rejoice!  I love the post-holiday shopping fun that happens this time of the year!  It is a great time to not only get Christmas/Holiday supplies for next year at a deep discount, but also things that can be useful to your family year 'round.

Target, and many other stores, marked down their Christmas section ...

  • The Elf on the Shelf

Maybe it's just my kids' schools, but the Elf on the Shelf is ALL the rage right now in the Pre-K through 1st grade circles.  It seems that everyone has a little elf visiting them this Christmas!  I have mixed feelings about the little guy.  We got our elf last year and I thought it was so cute and fun.  My kids loved him and looked eagerly each morning to see where he was and ...

  • Knowing When to Say When

I have just realized that pretty much the core of every struggle in my life is knowing when to say when.  How many pieces of chocolate is too many?  How many little touches to my kid's birthday party should I toil over?  Should I check just one more website or spend five more minutes checking Facebook or should I just go to bed?  How many toys will I buy at the big Target Toy Clearance?  ...

  • Black Friday has Become a Week of Crazy Deals!

I have never been a Black Friday shopper (growing up an hour from the nearest mall or Target makes it hard to get out to shop first thing in the morning the day after Thanksgiving).  But I seem to remember that in years past Black Friday was just a regular shopping day with more deals.  Then it evolved into stores opening at 5:00 a.m.   Then it turned into stores opening at midnight or even ON ...

  • Our Family KC Christmas Top Ten

Back in the summer we made a family "Summer Fun List" with our list of everything we wanted to do during the summer season.  I'm proud to say that we fit almost everything on our list into our 2 months of summer fun.  But I was thinking that we should come up with a Christmas Season Fun list, too!  And here is what we came up with:

    1. Watch the Thanksgiving Day Parade

    2.  Drive ...

  • Jumping in Leaves

I tackled one of the dreaded Brookside homeowner chores this afternoon:  raking.  The leaves are never ending here and our first round needed to be raked up.  As I raked my almost 5-year-old daughter was squealing with delight as she jumped in the leaf piles.  There isn't much better than hearing your child yell, "THIS IS SO FUN!" as they play.

But I was filled with a little bit of guilt.  You see, it hadn't ...

  • Me vs The Squirrels

Beautiful Brookside...it's a wonderful place to live, but this time of year it is full of evil little furry thieves.  Those squirrels may look cute with their fluffy tails and tiny little hands, but they are nothing but common pumpkin-stealing criminals.

Imagine my window boxes adorned with pumpkins.  Each one with a big pumpkin the middle and a row of cute little mini pumpkins on each side.  So festive!  Then imagine my horror when I ...

  • The Kansas City Zoo: One of my Family's Favorite Places

People often talk about their favorite things to do with kids in Kansas City and at the top of my list is always The Kansas City Zoo.  We LOVE the zoo and all it has to offer.  We've been members for the last two years and I firmly believe that a zoo membership is one of the best deals in town.  You can get a membership that gets your family free admission for the whole ...

  • You Get What you Pay For

You all know that I love a bargain as much as the next shopper, but there are some items where I just refuse to buy the "cheap" brand.  In general I think that store brands are great and that if I have a coupon for a brand I don't usually use that it will be fine. If you really want to do well with coupons you have to have an open mind about using different brands for many products.  ...

  • My Favorite Halloween Decoration

Fall is one of my favorite seasons for many reasons, one of which is how fun it is to decorate with fall goodies.  I love buying pumpkins, gourds and mums to spruce up our house and bring in such beautiful colors. Most of my fall decorations can be left up all the way to Thanksgiving because I have a lot of plain pumpkins that aren't too "Halloweenish."  But I have one Halloween decoration that I ...
