Happy Half Birthday to You!

Now I enjoy a good birthday celebration and think that one’s birth is certainly a cause to party, however, we are now celebrating half birthdays in our house for which I am not overly excited about. The reason? Because I gave birth to a child in the summer months, when school is not in session. So in order for her to celebrate her birthday at school with her friends, we have to do it on her half birthday (ok, I guess we don’t HAVE to, but I would feel bad if all the other kids got to celebrate their special day and she didn’t and no, I don’t feel like we need to do something just because everyone else is doing it, but I digress).

Every January 19 we mark the half-way point from one birthday to the next by making gooey butter cookies and having lunch at school with Tori. Which is all well and good, but then my younger daughter (who does not have a summer birthday) asks when her half birthday is. And she asks for treats on her half birthday. So I oblige and we celebrate yet another milestone. This year Ally had us sing “Happy Half Birthday to You” to Tori and wanted to go out and buy presents for her. I had to put my foot down and tell her there was no way we were buying presents for half birthdays.

I guess for the next several years I need to get used to celebrating half birthdays. Hey wait, maybe I’m onto something and I should start celebrating my half birthday (and, by the way, presents would be fine for me on my half birthday J).
