  • Hearing God

Conversation in our car the other day:

Ally (5): I pray and talk to God, but I don’t hear him talking to me.

Me: (Thinking to myself, how am I going to get this across to a 5-year old). Well, God hears you and He talks to you, but not with a voice like I am using now to talk to you. It’s different.

Tori (8) pipes up: Yeah, it’s like when ...

  • A Mom Getaway

Last weekend I went away with four friends for a much needed moms’ weekend. We shopped, ate out, played games and laughed a lot! I feel so fortunate to have such a wonderful group of friends that I can talk to, celebrate with, commiserate with and laugh with. They are such an important part of my life-every mom needs friends like these.

While I was away, the girls and dad had the weekend together. Ty ...

  • C'mon Spring!

With the warmer temps yesterday and the fact that we have been busy putting together the March issue, I’ve got a serious case of cabin fever! I love spending time outdoors as do my girls, so we took a long overdue walk yesterday. It was so nice to be outside and not be freezing and it was so good for the girls to run, hop, skip and jump like frogs-just what we all needed.

        Wait ...

  • Six Little Words

A few weeks ago there was something in the paper about writing your life’s story in only six words. For some reason, it really intrigued me. I like a good challenge and I wondered if I could really sum things up in just six words that would give an accurate portrayal of my time spent here. At first I though of listing the roles that I have and hats that I wear (mom, sister, ...

  • You Say Potato...

Kids mispronounce words. My theory is (and I have lots of theories, but that’s another topic for another day) that you don’t correct them when they mispronounce the word, rather you make sure to use the correct word in a sentence back to them and they will eventually learn how to correctly pronounce the word.

My theory worked beautifully with both my girls. Ally no longer says “sunder” for “thunder” and Tori no longer calls ...

  • Our Weekend House Guest

Molly is spending the weekend with us. Molly is a hamster and she is the class pet in Ally’s Pre-K. As star student of the week, Ally gets to bring home the hamster for the weekend (and she is SO excited and has been counting the days until Molly arrives).

I am not a pet person. We didn’t grow up with pets in the home (except for birds). I have allergies to both dogs and ...

  • Happy Half Birthday to You!

Now I enjoy a good birthday celebration and think that one’s birth is certainly a cause to party, however, we are now celebrating half birthdays in our house for which I am not overly excited about. The reason? Because I gave birth to a child in the summer months, when school is not in session. So in order for her to celebrate her birthday at school with her friends, we have to do it on ...

  • All By Myself

Whew, I’m tired! My husband has been out of town this week for work. He doesn’t travel often for work, at most once or twice a year. And for me, that is a good thing. It’s been a long week being the only parent at home with the girls. They have been well-behaved, it is just been tiring and taxing on me. I’ve missed having some “down time” away from the girls. I’ve missed having ...

  • Teeth Troubles

Over winter break we entered the world of orthodontia. Tori received a palate separator. My thinking was that by getting it over the break she would have time to adjust to it and not be so uncomfortable and self conscious once school was back in session. And with the snow days, she's had extra time to adjust!

She has inherited my small, crowded mouth and has several years of orthodontic work in front of her. I had ...

  • Happy 2010!

Happy New Year! How did you spend New Year's Eve? We get together with friends who have children and have fun eating, playing games, watching movies and ringing in the new year. For the last few years, I've been able to pull off celebrating midnight around 9:00 in the evening and then am able to get the girls together at a decent hour. I don't think I'll be able to get away with it much ...

  • Christmas Memories

I have lots of fond Christmas memories from my childhood. We always spent Christmas Eve with my mom's side of the family and Christmas Day with my dad's side. Each morning we would wake up and eat brunch. After brunch dad would peek into the living room to see if Santa had visited our house. Dad would call out with a "Ho, Ho, Ho!" to let us know that there were gifts from Santa waiting ...

  • Christmas is Coming

Well, here we are a week before Christmas. I think I have most of my shopping done and presents wrapped. I do still need something for my in-laws. Any suggestions? They are hard to buy for. Teacher gifts made and sent off to school, home decorated, cookies ready to be baked. I think I've covered most of my bases. The Christmas season always seems like a bit of a mad dash to me. I enjoy ...

  • Things that go bump in the night

I forgot to post my blog entry last night before I shut my computer down for the day. My plan was to get up early and do a little work and get my blog post up. But Ally (my 5-year-old) was up most of the night with a sore ear, so my plans were changed. She ended up spending the night with me in our bed so I could keep an eye on her. When ...

  • I'll Tell You What I Want, What I Really, Really Want

Shopping and Christmas presents are on my mind this week. My mom comes in town for one week each December to watch the girls so that I can knock out the majority of my Christmas shopping. She’s been here all this week and I’ve got the bulk of it finished. The girls love having the time with grandma, I love being able to get the shopping done and my husband and I take full advantage ...

  • Thankful Thoughts

I enjoy reading newspaper and magazine columns, especially humor columns. Dave Barry is one of my favorite national writers, while locally I have always enjoyed Joe Posnanski’s columns in the paper. Each year I loved to read Joe’s Thanksgiving column in which he gave a running list of things he was thankful for and so borrowing from Joe, below is my Thanksgiving list of what I am thankful for in 2009.

        Here goes, in no ...
