The Things I Will and Won't Miss About Summer Time with My Children

Well, the first day of school is finally here.  I chuckled as I read a friend’s Face Book update.  She mentioned that she isn’t excited to send her kids back to school this year so in order to get ready she is reminding herself of the things that she won’t miss about having all her kiddos home around the clock.  I decided to follow suit.

In no particular order, here are the things I will NOT miss about having three children home all day.

1.  Being the referee for every little squabble about, well, nothing really.  Siblings sure can fight over anything!

2.  Early morning wake up calls when we have no reason to be up early.  Children who are allowed to stay up late catching fire flies should have the decency to sleep in, don’t you think?

3.  The daily enforcing of nap times and quiet times.  Not fun!

4. Taking three children five and under to the grocery store.  The things that end up in my cart are amazing. (Sneaky little ones with their love for all things sweet and artificially colored.)

5.  The mess. It’s everywhere, all the time, no matter how often we tidy the house.

Those are my top five, and yet as I write them I can’t help but think of the things I WILL miss.

1.  Watching my children laugh together as they play in ways that only siblings can manage.

2.  Early morning snuggles knowing we have no place we have to be and seemingly all the time in the world.

3. The snuggles that inevitably follow those all too short nap times.

4.  The excuse to be goofy in the grocery store as I attempt to keep my children on task when they’d rather be causing chaos.

5.  Okay, I have to admit, I don’t think I’m going to miss the mess.  Maybe, just maybe, but probably not anytime soon.

Back to school is such an exciting and bittersweet time.  What will you miss?  What won’t you miss?

Happy School Days!  I hope you and your children have a wonderful year!

While there are quite a few things I'll miss, I think the biggest will be having the time to take my girls on roadies to St. Louis or Minneapolis etc... With school back in session, it makes it harder to take trips, since we don't want them to miss any school or valuable lessons. So that confines us to the weekends, which isn't bad...however, to take a really nice vacation or trip to say Orlando, Houston, Dallas etc...requires some extended off time. We'll also miss the big summer blockbuster movies, they seem to really enjoy the Fork n Screen theatres, something about eating some burgers n fries and seeing a movie at the same time that is truly enjoyable(probably moreso for me, than them!)

I can so empathize with everything you wrote.  While I am excited and scared and sad that my 5yr gets to start a new chapter in her life by starting Kindergarten, I can't help but rejoice in the fact that she is going back and I will get a break from the incessant fighting and screaming at each other.  However, it seems to be 3 fold when she gets home now!  They have to make up for lost time!

Your lists sound just like mine!!  I will miss the days of spontanious trips and watching the kids running around til WELL past their bedtimes.  I loved jumping in the kiddie pool with my three kiddos.  Last year was my oldest daughter's first year in full time school.  She had a great time and our second daughter got much more NEEDED mommy time. So this year with one in full time and one two days a week, I will be able to give each child some one on one time, which was impossible in the summer.  It's hard to not wish for next summer, but that will mean they will be another year older.... they grow up fast enough!

It is a lot of work and very tiring but I will miss it.  We do so many things and have so much fun that it would be hard not to do that often.

I will miss how lax our routine was in the summer. It was nice to not rush around, but I'm excited for my son's Kindergarten adventures!

I will miss our lazy days of summer, snuggles and T.V. time in the morning, swimming, spontaneous trips, and reading chapter books in the afternoon.  I definitely won't miss the mess summer brings to our house and I'm looking forward to one-on-one time with my daughter now that my son is back in school.

I won't miss the HOT summer days where had to stay indoors, but I will miss having a wide open schedule to just go with the flow and relax!

With 3 children under 4, I have days when I cannot wait for them to be in school.  Then I think about my oldest starting school in two years and I get misty eyed!

Thanks for sharing the ups and downs of motherhood!

School starting is one of those bittersweet times for us moms and for the kids too!

This year we sent our 3rd grader off to school and am missing her like crazy these first few days....she is such a huge help with her little brothers...Carson 3 and Jackson 2. We are also going to be relocating soon to Oregon so the memories that we have made over the summer here will stick with us always!

My son isn't old enough for school yet, but I am going back to school teaching part time.  I'm going to miss the freedom of no time constraints (except for naps, of course).  I miss him already!

I will miss staying up to catch fireflies, evening walk, swimming, playing at the park, spur of the moment get aways....and more.  I won't miss the HEAT!, the kids picking on each other out of boredom, and muddy hands and toes at 10 am!

We are sending our oldest to Kindgarten this year.  It is bittersweet.  I have enjoyed being able to stay at home with her and watch her grow up, learning all kinds of new things along way.  I can't wait to see and hear all about the new things she will learn while in school.

My daughters school is starting 2 weeks later than all districts that I know of. She will be going back finally on the 30th. She is going into kindergarten but is in montessori school so has been going for 2 years already. We are both so ready, this last week our usual spot (oceans of fun) has been closed and plus its been too cold. I know I will miss her but as an only child with no children neighbors it can get pretty lonely for her and it is a full time job to keep her hyperactive self entertained. Ive been to worlds, oceans, schlitterbahn, kaleidescope, jumping jax, concerts, and the zoo more times than I can count. I will however miss the long weeks she would stay with her aunt. I never get breaks like that during the school year and as a single mother I really need these to keep my sanity! 3 more days!
