FREE Nov. 17, Mt. Gilead Historic School & Church, 15918 Plattsburg Road, Kearney, MO. There will be a Christmas “selfie station” for taking photos, crafts for children to make, music, and hot cider and cookies. Mr. and Mrs. Claus will be in attendance. This is a free event.
The Luminary Walk will be held from 5 to 9 p.m., three weekends, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 23-24, Nov. 30-Dec.1, and Dec. 7-8. This Arboretum fundraiser features a mile of candles, holiday lights, live musical entertainment, Santa Claus in the Depot, horse-dawn wagon rides, hot cider around a campfire and mystical Gnome and Fairy Villages. Volunteers and staff members are transforming the Arboretum into a wonderland of candles and lights, music and holiday fun. Thousands of candles line the walkways and trails. Holiday lights will be on display from trees, buildings and bridges. Children will be thrilled to see Santa's Woodland Depot in the Train Garden and chat with him nightly from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.
- Santa's Arrival at Crown Center FREE Nov. 23 at 10am Santa Claus arrives in a horse-drawn carriage to kick off the holiday season. Join Santa as he makes his way to Santa’s Gingerbread Station, where he resides through December 24.
- EBT Santa's Countdown to Christmas FREE Nov. 23 – Dec. 31. Don’t miss one of Kanas City’s favorite pieces of Christmas nostalgia. EBT Laughing Santa, who first appeared at KC’s Emery, Bird, Thayer department store in the early 1900s, has been providing memories for new generations at Crown Center since 1979. Children of all ages will marvel at this Jolly Ol’ Soul as he chuckles his way through the holiday season while counting down the days until Christmas. Open during Crown Center Shops holiday hours.
- Santa's Gingerbread Station FREE Nov. 23 – Dec. 31. All aboard for a favorite holiday tradition at Crown Center! Kids and families can explore this interactive exhibit, meet and have their photo taken with Santa Claus (through December 24), climb aboard the Crown Center Express Train Engine, and enjoy Gingerbread Village. No admission fee. Photos with Santa are available for a fee, or you may take your own. Open during Crown Center Shops holiday hours.
- Santa Dives with Penguins Weekends beginning Nov. 23. What’s red and white and swimming with the penguins at Helzberg Penguin Plaza? Santa! Get a one-of-a-kind photo of Santa as penguins torpedo around him. Watch the penguin bubbles trail the man in the red suit and hear the children giggle. Dives are at 2 p.m.
- Holiday Wild at the Zoo Dec. 1 & 2. Santa, his elves and Mrs. Claus will be at the Zoo for Holiday Wild. This is your chance to tell him what’s on your wish list. Join us from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for polar-riffic activities. Bring your camera and have your picture taken with Santa! You can also catch Santa diving inside the cold weather penguin exhibit at 2 p.m. Our gentoo and king penguins will be taking a walk in the chilly outdoor air during our Penguin March at 11 a.m. Friends of the Zoo (FOTZ) members will enjoy an exclusive breakfast snack and a special meet and greet with Santa on Saturday, December 1 from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.
- Winter Wonderland at the Zoo Dec. 15 & 16. Celebrate the holiday season with the Zoo’s furry, feathery and fluffy friends Saturday, December 15 and Sunday, December 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Our gentoo and king penguins will venture outside in the frosty air for a Penguin March at 11 a.m. See Santa dive underwater with our penguins at 2 p.m. Get into the holiday spirit with this festive weekend at the Kansas City Zoo!

Nov. 24 and Dec. 1, 8:00-10:00 a.m., in the Paddlewheel Atrium of the Arabia Steamboat at City Market, the Kansas City Museum’s Fairy Princess will host an enchanting experience for children that includes a child-friendly buffet breakfast, meet-and-greet and holiday entertainment. Each child will receive a special gift from the Fairy Princess to commemorate their visit. The Fairy Princess tradition began in 1935 at Kline’s Department Store at 11th & Main in Downtown Kansas City and grew into a local icon after decades as a holiday attraction for children. In 1987, seventeen years after Kline’s permanently closed, The Kansas City Museum revived the Fairy Princess as an annual holiday presentation. Advanced tickets are required for Breakfast with the Fairy Princess. Adults: $20, children 12 & under: $10. A limited quantity is available and must be purchased online. Limit 8 per person. Orders cannot be taken over the phone or in person. All children must be accompanied by an adult. All guests must have a ticket to be admitted to the event venue. Tickets are non-refundable.

Dec. 1 & 8, Belton, Grandview & Kansas City Railroad 502 E Walnut St, Belton, MO. Santa will join us for a 40 minute train ride, will visit with guests, and will stop for photos if you wish, all while the train moves down the track. Be sure to bring a camera! We will sing songs and talk to Santa about activities at the North Pole. After the train, the Railroad will serve hot chocolate and a cookie for each passenger. The Gift Shop will be open too! Did we mention to bring a camera? Only 46 seats are available per train and they sell quickly. The cost is $17 per passenger three years and older, $5.00 for children under the age of 3. All tickets will be handled on a "will call" basis, and can be picked up on the day of the train ride.

FREE Dec. 14 – 18 , Union Station, 30 W. Pershing, Kansas City, MO. Back for its 18th annual run, the Kansas City Southern Holiday Express train brings Santa Claus and his elves back to Union Station. The Kansas City Southern Holiday Express is unlike any other train in the world! One of Kansas City s favorite holiday traditions, the Kansas City Southern Holiday Express Train brings Santa to Union Station just before Christmas. Guests can visit with Santa and tour the train for free. Led by Kansas City Southern, Southern Belle business train, the Holiday Express train includes a smiling tank car Rudy; a flatcar carrying Santa’s sleigh, reindeer and a miniature village; a gingerbread boxcar; the elves’ workshop; the reindeer stable; and a little red caboose.
Dec. 15 from 2-4pm, Line Creek Community Center , 5940 NW Waukomis Drive, Kansas City, MO. Pay only $4, with a donation of a non-perishable food item for Harvesters. Skate Rental $2. Participants will get to skate with Santa during the public session. There will also be a free photo booth in Trail Side Room.
Dec. 15, Indoor Aquatics Center, Lawrence, KS. The reindeer seem to be ahead of schedule this year and will be delivering Santa early to the Indoor Aquatic Center for some holiday fun. The craft room will be open for ornament making and stocking decorating at Noon. Then a special visitor will manage to stop by during his busy holiday season to review wish lists, give out presents and take photos with the children. Be sure to bring your camera! Pre-registration is required by Wednesday, Dec. 12, to secure crafts; may pay day-of to participate in the Santa visit and swimming. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Dec. 16 from 1-2:30pm at the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures (5235 Oak St., Kansas City, MO). Join us for hot cocoa, cookies, and a visit with Father Christmas. Professional storyteller Jim “Two Crows” Wallen will engage the entire family with tales of holiday traditions around the world in the museum’s festively decorated Tureman Education Center. You will never catch me I’m the Gingerbread man.” Breakfast with Santa has become a popular community event in Merriam. The morning is full of holiday fun with this year’s theme “Gingerbread”. After all the candy canes have been found, we’ll head inside to warm up with some hot chocolate and cookies and enjoy a showing of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” at the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center.
Dec. 14, Shawnee Indian Mission Museum , 3403 W 53rd St, Shawnee, KS. Bring your flashlight to participate in the candy cane hunt in the Christmas Tree Forest for children ages 10 and under. Parents must accompany their children on the candy cane hunt. After, head indoors the Mission where children will be provided a tree ornament to decorate and take home while enjoying some hot cocoa. Finish off your evening with a chat and photo opportunity with Santa!
Dec. 18, Cornerstone Park, Gardner, KS. Registration for this event is $3.00 . It is rumored that Santa is about to hide hundreds of candy canes around Cornerstone Park! Grab your flashlight and join us as we search for hidden candy canes. Maximum number of participants is 100, so hurry up and register today! Registration Deadline December 7. Registration will begin on November 1!
Dec. 18, Johnson County Fairgrounds Green Building, 136 E. Washington, Gardner, KS. Immediately following the Candy Cane Hunt, head on over to the Johnson County Fairgrounds Green Building where you will be greeted by Santa and Mrs. Claus! We will be showing a holiday themed movie, so be sure to bring your sleeping bag and hang in your PJ’s for this cozy Christmas event!
Historic Santa & Storytime
Dec. 1, Shoal Creek Living History Museum, 7000 Northeast Barry Road, Kansas City, MO. $5 per person (age 5 and under free). Take a break from the present and experience a 19th century Christmas. Enjoy walking tour through our holiday decorated homes and log cabins of the 1800’s while re-enactors bring the village to life. Visit St. Nicholas in the Thornton Mansion in his resplendent green velvet robes, make your Christmas purchases at the Mercantile and post your St. Nicholas letter. Experience a Civil War encampment, warm up by the “potbellied” stove in the school, find peace in the serene setting of an 1884 Church, see how 1880’s Swedish immigrants celebrated Santa Lucia Day and watch how lace was made in the Arnold Home. End your visit with a brief horse drawn sleigh ride through the countryside from noon to 4:00 pm.
FREE at Mid-Continent Public Libraries. Get in the Christmas spirit with a story from Santa, and make a simple craft to take home. Parents and grandparents, don't forget your cameras. An adult must accompany each child. Registration required.
