Dad’s Halloween Pranks

James snatched a pumpkin treat, barely cool enough to touch. “Father, what did you do on Halloween when you were little?”

Touchdown!

“Got any big plans for tonight?” On this warm, Friday evening in September, Sandi was headed out the door for work and I stood on the porch, bidding her farewell.

The Scientific Way

Sandi and I sat on the patio the evening before the new school year and enjoyed a quiet moment in the cool air.

Sheet Lightning

Two things struck me about the air conditioning of my youth: expensive and rare.

Sitting with Dad

“Bill, I have to go somewhere for a couple of hours. Can you stay with Dad for a bit?”

Mom’s Gifts

“Mom, what’s this?” I pointed to something on David’s tummy. He’d only been home for a couple days and I wanted to learn everything about my new baby brother.

A Role Model

Autism had made traditional approaches to discipline ineffective, so we’d relied on alternative methods. We tried to make our home a refuge of peace, and it had worked for James.

Stuck

Immobilized. Unable to move. I could breathe, but nothing more. This wasn’t my fault, but I knew exactly how it happened.

Passing the Torch

Sandi took a sip of coffee and nestled into my arm. “You’re going to have to talk to Ian. He has a girlfriend and he’s really embarrassed about it. You’ll have to be gentle, but he needs to know how to treat a relationship.”

Independent Contractors

“Dad, I need some money.” Ian said one to me one winter evening.
